Teaching Kids Healthy Eating Habits

Many of us started out in life with some pretty bad eating habits, which included eating a lot of fats and sweets.

If you grew up in the late 1970s or 80s, you probably ate fast food at least one or two times per week. This was the time when fast food chains like Kentucky Fried Chicken and McDonalds were really starting to get popular. Many moms loved these fast food chains because it allowed them at least one day without having to cook. Although this was a fast way to get a meal, the food overall was very unhealthy. It has been reported that the McDonald's 'Big Mac' and Burger King 'Whopper' contain over 1,000 calories and over 20 grams of fat.

In addition to eating fast food, many of us also started eating other types of bad food at an early age which included doughnuts and ice cream. In just about every neighborhood there was either a Krispy Kreme or Dunkin Donut shop. The way the donuts are displayed through the window make it pretty hard to resist them. It also doesnt help that you can smell the donuts cooking a mile away. No one will argue that Krispy Kreme donuts taste good, the problem is that the donuts are not good for you. Every time you bite into a Krispy Kreme donut you are literally eating a piece of fried dough covered in liquid sugar. However some say Dunkin Donuts are even worse. There you have donuts in just about every type of flavor you can imagine. This includes donuts filled with raspberry, vanilla, and maple cream -- and donuts topped with nuts and double dipped in chocolate. What kid could resist these?

The easy availability of all these fast food products and sweet treats has helped to create a generation of obese children. Because of this, there is a national campaign going on designed to teach kids healthier eating habits.

Getting a child to eat healthy wont happen overnight, however their eating habits will change over time if they are introduced to more healthier eating options. A good way to start is by allowing the child to experiment with different ways to make a low calorie prepare dessert. Some examples include making a parfait out of granola cereal, yogurt and fruit instead of nuts, chocolate chips and ice cream. Another example would be letting the child experiment with making a pizza topped with vegetables and cheese instead of one topped with bacon, hamburger and other types of meat.

Teaching a child healthy eating habits is not easy, however they are more likely to eat healthier if they have good tasting alternative options. Getting a child to eat healthy will also be easier if they are involved with the cooking process and coming up with new recipe ideas.
