Addicted to Sweets

Many people have a sweets addiction, but most wont admit it. They wont admit it because they dont want anyone to know that they are addicted to foods that are not good for them. Some of these people are slim and look very healthy, so you would never know to look at them that they have a sweets addiction. There are many people who are addicted to desserts like brownies, chocolate chip cookies and strawberry shortcake. Some of these people work in office buildings that have numerous bakery and candy shops located in the food court. They visit these shops frequently and buy themselves things like candy bars and cookies, which they hope will help them make it through the day. For some, making it through the day means eating a chocolate fudge brownie for breakfast or a slice of cheesecake during their mid-afternoon break. Those who usually do this typically work in very stressful jobs. Instead of doing something healthy to relieve their stress like exercising or drinking water, they eat ...

Recipes with a Twist

Most of us have eaten a dish that contained an ingredient we just couldnt we put our finger on. It may have been a mystery spice ingredient in a sweet potato pie or a bowl of chili. Although we didnt know what the mystery ingredient was, we agreed that it gave the dish a unique twist and flavor that we liked. One way to give a traditional spaghetti and meatball recipe a unique twist, is by using chocolate flavored pasta and stuffing the meatballs with toasted walnuts and mini-chocolate chips. It is very surprising how well the chocolate ingredients go with the tomatoes, garlic, and other savory ingredients. And, if you want to give the recipe another twist, top the dish with a teaspoon of chocolate sauce. It will be fun to watch people try to guess what the mystery ingredient is. Now this is how to make a boring spaghetti recipe more exciting. Another recipe with a twist is deep dish lasagna made with layers of mascarpone cheese and hot sauce. The mascarpone cheese will give the dish...

Keeping a Healthy Digestive System

Having a healthy digestive system is the key to overall good health. Unfortunately there are millions of people today who have serious digestive problems. One of the main reasons many suffer with digestive issues is because they dont eat enough fiber. It would seem that getting enough daily fiber would be easy, but it is not. This is because the daily foods we like to eat are usually low on fiber and higher in other things like fats and sugar. High levels of sugar make it difficult for the digestive system to process food. So it looks like the only option for keeping a healthy digestive system is by making a concentrated effort to eats foods that are high in fiber. When some people think about increasing their daily fiber intake, they usually think of things like steamed broccoli and bran flakes. Fortunately however there are a lot of things you can eat that have a high level of fiber that taste better then bran flakes and plain steamed broccoli. One includes high fiber honey flavored...

Delaying and Changing your Retirement Plans

In light of the unstable economy and constant debates going on in Congress, many people are starting to make changes and updates to their initial retirement plans. Prior to this, most had planned on working until age 62 and then relocating to another state to live out their retirement years. Unfortunately, most have had to put these plans on hold or change them all together. Not being able to retire as planned has frustrated a lot of people. Many have worked for twenty five years or more, and feel that they have earned the right to retire the way they want to. For some, current economic conditions have forced them to delay their retirement plans for two to three years. This may not sound like a long time, but to someone who has already worked twenty plus years, these additional years seem like a lifetime. Recent surveys conducted by AARP and other similar organizations, revealed that many soon to be retirees dont feel very confident about their financial futures. Some are very conce...

Teaching Kids Healthy Eating Habits

Many of us started out in life with some pretty bad eating habits, which included eating a lot of fats and sweets. If you grew up in the late 1970s or 80s, you probably ate fast food at least one or two times per week. This was the time when fast food chains like Kentucky Fried Chicken and McDonalds were really starting to get popular. Many moms loved these fast food chains because it allowed them at least one day without having to cook. Although this was a fast way to get a meal, the food overall was very unhealthy. It has been reported that the McDonald's 'Big Mac' and Burger King 'Whopper' contain over 1,000 calories and over 20 grams of fat. In addition to eating fast food, many of us also started eating other types of bad food at an early age which included doughnuts and ice cream. In just about every neighborhood there was either a Krispy Kreme or Dunkin Donut shop. The way the donuts are displayed through the window make it pretty hard to resist them. It ...

Toxic Work Environments are Bad for Your Health

Working in a toxic work environment can be very bad for your health. Not only does this type of environment affect you mentally, but it can also affect your physical health as well. Working in a stressful environment over a long period time can become very toxic for the mind and body. This is one of the reasons why employee absenteeism is very high. Toxic work environments have been around for a long time, however they seem to have increased somewhat in the past several years. Some of this may be due to the unstable economy, which has created high levels of stress for CEOs and business owners. At many manufacturing companies today for example, the owner is feeling a lot of pressure from overseas competitors. This type of stress usually trickles down to other divisions and departments. Other ways toxic work environments are created, is by disgruntled employees constantly spreading gossip and rumors of gloom and doom. Just about everyone has worked with someone like this. All it takes i...

Teenage Binge Drinking

Teenage drinking is an issue that families have been dealing with for years. However, in more recent years binge drinking among teens has gotten out of control. No one seems to know why binge drinking among teens is on the rise, but some therapists feel that it is related to online peer pressure. Although teen peer pressure is nothing new, it has become more of a problem now that so many teens use social media. Social media is not being directly blamed for the rise in teen binge drinkink, but it has had an impact on how teens interact with other. This particularly includes teens who like to bully other teens. It is the increased level of bullying that has driven some teens to binge drink. This has unfortunately included teens as young as thirteen years old. It is really sad to hear about children this young doing something like binge drinking to forget their problems. In regards to teen bullying, social media has made it easier for teens to send threatening messages to each other. What...

A Look at Bike Friendly Cities

In an effort to attract more young families and young professionals, some cities like Portland and Atlanta are adding more bike lanes near parks and communities. For many years, the city of Portland has been well known for being a very bike friendly place. This includes having dedicated bike lanes in major residential areas. Despite already being considered a very bike friendly city, Portland is continuing to add even more bike lanes and bike paths for local area residents. This may be hard for some to believe, but having bike friendly streets is one of the reasons many people relocate from across the country to Portland. In some ways the city of Atlanta is playing catch-up when it comes to adding bike lanes and being a first class bike friendly city. Because Atlanta has become such a popular relocation destination for single individuals (who often like to ride bikes to work), the city has been busy building new bike lanes throughout several in-town neighborhoods. This includes new b...

The Health Benefits of Nuts & Berries

One of the quickest ways to improve your health is to eat some berries and nuts. For many years these two foods have been used to treat diseases and other medical conditions. Incorporating berries into your daily diet can help to improve your digestive system. This is because most berries contain a high percentage of minerals and fiber. Most berries also contain a lot of antioxidants which helps to protect the body from inflammation and infections. Some of the berries that have the most health benefits are blueberries, strawberries and cranberries. Blueberries are high in antioxidants and strawberries contain high levels of vitamin C. While cranberries contain vitamins and nutrients that help to cleanse the digestive system and prevent urinary tract infections. This is why so many doctors recommend eating cranberries at least two to three times a week. Although most berries taste good by themselves, they also taste good combined with other foods like low-fat cheeses and yogurt. Berries...

Preventing Stress & Job Burnout

In this hectic world we live in today it is really easy to get over stressed and burned out. This especially includes getting burned out on the job. I for one know how easy it is to get burned out working in a job you don't like. Just like so many other people I have worked at jobs I didn't particularly like because I needed the money. One job in particular that was really stressful for me was when I worked for a life insurance company. I worked as a sales assistant and my job involved collecting overdue payments. The job was so stressful because my boss put a lot of pressure on the sales team to collect as much money as possible. I can remember working a lot of 50 and 60 hour weeks. It was during this time that I developed my own personal strategy for reducing stress which helped me not get burned out. The first thing I did was tell my boss that I could no longer work 50 and 60 hour weeks. I told him that I was willing to work through my lunch hour one or two ...

Survey: Americans Love Snack Foods

There have been several online surveys launched in recent months that indicate snack food products are very popular in the United States. Some of the states that have the highest levels of snack food consumption are Ohio, Texas, South Carolina and Georgia. According to several of these surveys, one of the most popular snack foods in the U. S. today is potato chips. I definitely believe this because I am somewhat of a potato chip addict myself. There have actually been times when I have eaten a whole bag of potato chips all by myself. The surveys also revealed the current most popular potato chip brands. On most surveys the number one brand was Lay's potato chips. Just like its commercial says, its hard to eat just one. Currently, Lays accounts for 38% of the U. S. potato chip market. Aside from tasting so good, another reason I think that Lay's is such a popular potato chip brand is because there are so many flavors to choose from. Back about twenty years ...

National Survey of Children's Health

The National Survey of Children's Health is designed to track the physical and emotional well being of children up to age 17. The survey is broken down into several topic categories which helps to identify trends in children's behavior. Some of these categories include parental health, family interactions, school interactions, after school activities, and the safety factor in neighborhoods.  In addition, the survey also targets children from uninsured households which involves seeing how being uninsured affects the child's emotional and physical health.   As a result of the unstable economic conditions over the past several years, thousands of children across the country unfortunately have experienced some physical and emotional problems. For some, this has included having to move to a new neighborhood and having to adjust to new surroundings. While moving to a new neighborhood might not be a big deal for most adults, it can be an unsettling experience for ...

National Survey on Drug Use and Health

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health is conducted yearly and includes comments and interviews from over 60,000 individuals. Those chosen to participate in the survey are required to be at least 12 years of age. The purpose of the survey is to provide state and national level data on the current use of illicit drugs, tobacco and alcohol. Most survey participants take the survey in their own home. The survey is conducted by a personal interviewer and the participant inputs their responses on a laptop or computer. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health organization makes a strong effort to ensure that all groups of people are represented in this survey. This includes doing intense research to select specific communities and households. Doing this is the only effective way to gather data that represents all regions of the country. The data that is gathered from this survey helps to identify specific trends which includes how many people are currently using tobacco ...
